It's a characteristic of life that things happen, things that take us by surprise and things that we can't control. A lot of the time, the things that come to pass are just a matter of circumstance. We found ourselves in a situation and reacted to it as best as we could. It's really rather simple in that way. And sometimes we still blame ourselves for what came to pass, for the messes we later found ourselves in, the confusion it caused, the disruptions to our seemingly normal lives...
Maybe we're wrong for trying to learn from what happened before. Perhaps it is this desire to find something notable in the past to alter in the future that keeps us trapped in what once used to be. We can't change it, and we can't relive it, no matter how hard we try. Maybe we just need to accept that for what it is and forgive ourselves, allow ourselves to find new life beneath the layer that is stale.
Because things have happened. Mistakes have been made. Words were said that shouldn't have been uttered. Lives were changed that should never have been touched. Connections were made where there had been gaps for a reason. All around us, things went wrong. Events transpired that shouldn't have.
And here we are, in what is really the present but that many can only see as the aftermath of the past. We don't need to change the world, we don't have to be these great movers and thinkers. What we need is to be compassionate and passionate, loving and caring, forgiving and accepting. The thing is, we don't need all of this nonsense, all of this ideology that doesn't mean anything.
Maybe we've all been so busy trying to find ourselves, that we haven't been being ourselves. And maybe, just maybe, that's all it really takes.
