I'm sorry.
The whisper flooded the silence and sank slowly through the air. There was nothing to stop it. No ears were there to listen, no barriers to soften its fall to the earth. It was too late.
Please, I--
The voice died out. The words creeping through empty space were deafening and the fear they brought was too great. A single strangled sob escaped a pair of lips, and all was silent once more. The room resonated with emptiness, filled with the void of uncertainty.
Minutes passed. It may have been hours.
A single gasp was heard, then the sound of a body hitting the hard floor.
It was over.
Or maybe it has just begun.
The voice had a frightening leer to it, a malicious taunt hidden beneath every sound. There was no laughter, yet the air resonated with a mockery that gnawed at every corner and wouldn't stop.
Finally, the air stopped ringing. There was no person in the room, no soul...only the heartless body, with a false organ pumping frigid blood. There was no life in that, just the mechanical workings of human anatomy, no more than physical sciences at work.
Such a pity.
Another sigh. The door creaked open, then was shut, leaving a cold graveyard of broken dreams and savored fantasies behind. All that could be heard was the strictly measured click of metal soles on the tile, as the figure walked along the dark hallway and faded into the distance. The whisper sped through the air like a bullet.
I will be the one that you can never forget.
